Baptism is one of the most powerful and beautiful steps a follower of Jesus can take. But what does it actually mean? Why do Christians get baptised? And is it really that important?
1. BAPTISM IS A RESPONSE TO JESUS
Baptism doesn’t make you a Christian—it’s a public declaration that you already are one. It’s how we go public with our faith, showing the world that we’ve put our trust in Jesus Christ. When Jesus said, “Go and make disciples… baptising them” (Matthew 28:19), He wasn’t offering a suggestion. He was giving a clear step of obedience for all who follow Him.
2. BAPTISM IS A PICTURE OF THE GOSPEL
Baptism tells a story. When someone is lowered into the water, it symbolizes being buried with Christ—dying to their old way of life. When they rise up out of the water, it pictures resurrection—new life in Jesus. The Apostle Paul put it like this:
“We were buried with Him through baptism into death… so that just as Christ was raised… we too may live a new life.” (Romans 6:4)
In short, baptism is a living, breathing picture of the gospel at work in us.
3. BAPTISM IS A STEP OF FAITH AND OBEDIENCE
Getting baptised isn’t about having your life all together. It’s about surrender. It’s about saying, “Jesus, I belong to You.” Baptism marks a line in the sand: your old life is behind you, and your new life in Christ has begun.
It’s not a private ritual. It’s a bold, joyful, and often emotional moment where heaven celebrates, and the church surrounds you.
4. BAPTISM CONNECTS YOU TO THE CHURCH
When you're baptised, you're not just stepping into the water—you're stepping into the community of faith. You're saying, “I’m part of God’s family.” It's a powerful way to identify and integrate with the body of Christ, both locally and globally.
Baptism is not about perfection, it’s about direction. It's not just a ceremony—it's a declaration. It's an outward sign of an inward change. If you’ve trusted Jesus but haven’t been baptised, this is your next step. It’s time to go public with your faith.
